TERRELL FRAZIER

Michigan State University
Terrell Frazier graduated from Michigan State University, where he majored in Journalism. He has been writing and publishing since high school. He has served as editor and writer on several student papers and has received an Excellence in Journalism award. Terrell is also a recent graduate of the New School in New York and serves as a health communications fellow at the New York University School of Medicine. During his first summer, he interned at Knight Ridder Tribune news service, where he wrote articles which appeared in newspapers all over the United States. In 2005, he interned at the U.S. Department of Labor.

JOSEPH K. GITHUKU

University of Maryland
Joseph Githuku is a native of Kenya, where he was fortunate to have studied at a rigorous Catholic boarding school and one of the country’s most prestigious high schools. Having moved to the United States during his high school years, Joseph expresses sincere appreciation for the freedoms and opportunities that Americans enjoy and a strong determination to use the American political system to benefit the lives of others. He studied Political Science at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. In 2010, Joe received his JD from the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore. During his first summer as an Institute scholar, Joseph interned at the U.S. Department of Labor. In 2005, he interned with the House Committee on Governmental Reform.

DARIUS A. GRAHAM

Florida A&M University
Darius Graham earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Florida A&M University. At FAMU, Darius founded the Honor Student Association and served as its first president in addition to his heavy involvement in student government. He was captain of the FAMU Mock Trial Team; former host of “In the Know,” a news and public affairs radio show; and president of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. Currently, Darius serves as executive director of Books All Around , a non-profit organization he founded. For his academic achievements and community involvement, Darius was one of the finalists of the 2005 Florida College Student of the Year Award. In 2006, Darius was selected to USA Today’s College Academic All-Stars First Team for all of his achievements while a student at FAMU. Darius graduated from the UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law in 2009, where he was editor-in-chief of the Berkeley Journal of African-American Law & Policy. He is currently an associate at the law firm Akin Gump in Washington, DC. As an Institute scholar, Darius spent his first summer interning at the US Department of State. In his final summer, he interned for the US Department of Labor.

ANDRAE JAMES

Prairie View A&M University
Andrae James attended Prairie View A&M University in Texas on a ROTC Scholarship and a distinguished academic scholarship. He majored in Political Science and is interested in a career in law and politics. Andrae was the recipient of the Superior Cadet Award, holds University Honors and maintains a place on the National Dean’s List. After graduating, Andrae fulfilled his commitment with the US Army. He was recently promoted to Captain. Andrae spent his first summer interning for the Department of the Army and returned there in 2005.

ARTIS J. JENKINS

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Jarrod Jenkins studied Political Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , where he earned National Dean’s List honors. In the past, he served as an advisor to the DeKalb County School Board and as a mentor for underprivileged youth through the Partners for Kids program. He recently graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate and Master’s of Public Administration joint degree. While in law school, he was also a member of the editorial board of the Georgia Law Review. He hopes to become an attorney and politician in the future. Jarrod spent his first summer at the Institute interning at the US Department of Education. In 2005, he interned at the Washington Legal Foundation.

KENDALL J. LYONS

Oklahoma Christian University
Kendall Lyons graduated from Oklahoma Christian University, where he majored in Broadcast Journalism and managed the university’s radio station. Beyond his academic and career pursuits, Kendall is a mentor for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America. He currently works for KFOR-TV, NBC 4 as a weekend overnight assignment editor and writer. He wants to attain a Masters of Meteorology and become a news broadcaster. In his free time, Kendall is writing a book on youth ministry and helping low income parents gather resources to educate their children. During his first summer in Washington, Kendall interned at Radio America. He returned there the very next summer in 2005.

CHRISTIEN D. OLIVER

Michigan State University
Christien Oliver graduated from Michigan State University in 2005 with a degree in Social Relations, specializing in Political Economy, while earning Phi Beta Kappa honors. As an undergraduate, Christien spent a summer at the University of Yucatan in Mexico studying Spanish. He is a graduate of the George Washington University Law School and has served as a law clerk for a judge in Montgomery County, MD. He is currently employed at Hunton Williams, LLP in Tysons Corner, VA. During his first summer with the Institute, Christien interned at the Washington Legal Foundation. In 2005, he conducted research at the Howard University Legal Center.

JOHN T. SAUNDERS

University of Massachusetts at Amherst
John Saunders participated in the distinguished Commonwealth College honors program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has earned numerous awards, including, 21st Century Scholar and ALANA Honors Society Scholar. In past summers, he has volunteered his time to work with young people in his community. Since graduating from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University in 2008, he has served as the Chief Program Officer for the Institute for Responsible Citizenship. During his first summer as an Institute scholar, he interned at the U.S. Department of Education. In 2005, he interned with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The following summer, John returned to the Institute as the 2006 summer fellow.

STEPHEN WESLEY

Hampton University
Stephen Wesley studied Finance at Hampton University and received honors from his department for his academic achievements. On campus, he was president of the Student Government Association. Upon graduating, Stephen returned to Hampton and served as assistant director for Alumni Affairs. He now works for the Department of Defense. One day, he hopes to become a U.S. Senator. During his first summer at the Institute. Stephen interned at the Senate Budget Committee. The following summer, he interned for Friedman Billings Ramsey.
